A modest beginning would naturally implicate a slow stride and a tumultuous progress in the general mind. But then the fact defies the expectations and we often see meagre beginnings ascend to cherishable heights in a fascinating way. Suffices to quote the old Chinese proverb "a mile's journey begins with one stride." A stride made with vision and winning the helping hands of others.
This is the story of Bethel Teaching General Hospital , one of the largest and indisputably the most sophisticated hospital in Ethiopia . The seed of this huge accomplishment was a small clinic established only 10 years back by Dr. Yigeremu Asfaw Feleke, a renowned Gynecologist- obstetrician. The Clinic was established with a capital of 110,000 Birr and was specialized in maternal and child services. Regardless of its small size, that same clinic grounded the seed of dream for a fast growing, huge, all- inclusive medical complex now known as Bethel Teaching General Hospital . Started with a small few-rooms, few staff clinic, the Bethel-vision-of -health went up in to a higher clinic and, then hospital.
The dream came true in amazing pace and the clinic was expanding in capacity and services. It was plain that the former mansion serving as the sole building of the clinic wouldn't by any means meet the exceedingly expanding demand. Then came the plan to establish the current compound. Construction was started in June 1998 in a formerly suburban area of Addis Ababa which later developed in to a modern living neighborhood and established itself in to businesses following the hospital. Now the area inherited its name from the hospital. Its service was inaugurated in year 2000 and became function as a generalized, around- 24hrs Hospital with several specialized, sophisticated and efficient in patient wards and out patient departments. |
